Driver Education Instructors Needed in Southern Oregon
Tuition-Free Training Offered at RCC
GRANTS PASS, OR – If you have a yen to make Southern Oregon roads safer, or are just looking for a path to well-paying, part-time employment, Rogue Community College (RCC) in partnership with Western Oregon University, is hosting a valuable training opportunity, tuition-free, for those interested in being employed as a driver education instructor.
Through Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) grant funding, the normal training cost of $1,634 per person is paid for on behalf of Oregon residents taking the instructor training for the first time. Participants pay only $99 for course materials and, upon successful completion, receive certification that qualifies them for employment opportunities at RCC and other driver’s training schools across Southern Oregon and statewide.
Each year RCC’s Driver Ed courses fill-up due to high demand and “new instructors are greatly needed”, said Diane Hoover, RCC Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. Wages for ODOT certified trainers at RCC start at $21.50 per hour with a flexible schedule of 10-20 hours per week.
The once-a-year training in Grants Pass is offered on Saturdays and Sundays, over a total of nine summer weekends. Dates for the next RCC-based training are: June 25-26; July 9-10, 16-17, 23-24 and 30-31, August 6-7, 13-14, 20-21 and 27-28. Attendance is required on all dates, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for a total of 144 hours. Registration is now open.
The three phases of instruction focus on the foundations of traffic safety education, fundamentals of classroom instruction and fundamentals of training behind the wheel. All classes will be held face-to-face at 3345 Redwood Highway, Grants Pass in a supportive teambuilding environment.
Once participants complete the course and become certified, they are eligible to apply for driver education instructor positions at RCC. Driver education courses are offered year-round at RCC.
