Cave Junction – The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board awarded $148,429 to Illinois Valley Soil and Water Conservation District for the Illinois Valley Water Quality Monitoring 2024-6 Project at their October 22-23, 2024 board meeting.
The award was one of 71 restoration, technical assistance, monitoring, and engagement grants to local organizations statewide totaling $14,248,381 to support fish and wildlife habitat and water quality projects. “It is thrilling to collect the information that helps our community better care for the water we all rely on,” said Maelagh Baker, Water Quality program manager for the IVSWCD.
In the I.V. WQM 2024-6 project, the goal is to extend and expand the Illinois Valley Water Quality Monitoring project portfolio with a robust baseline of water quality data in the watershed. The data will inform watershed conditions and restoration plans, make crucial data publicly accessible, and support improved source water quality for the community and habitat conditions for coho salmon and other species of concern. It is expected to begin April 1, 2025 and be completed by Dec. 31, 2026. The data from this project will guide and enhance efforts within the North Illinois
Valley Strategic Implementation Area. The project will be collaboratively managed in close partnership with the Illinois Valley Watershed Council.
Funding for these grants, awarded by the OWEB Board, comes from the Oregon Lottery, and Federal Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery funds provided by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration.
Since 1999, the Oregon Lottery has provided over $525 million to OWEB’s grant program that helps restore, maintain, and enhance Oregon’s watersheds. Combined, the Lottery has earned nearly $15 billion for watershed enhancements, public education, state parks, and economic development.
