Siskiyou Festival of Arts, Science, and Culture

by | Jan 18, 2023 | Culture

Artists in the Applegate and throughout the Rogue and Illinois valleys find inspiration in the wild nature of the Siskiyou Crest. We see it in paintings, mosaics, and tapestries of its landscape; sculptures of its wildlife and magnificent trees; photographs of its rare wildflowers and beautiful vistas; videos of its rivers and riparian habitats. When these lands are threatened by logging and other incursions, our arts suffer.

To bring attention to the beauty and importance of the Siskiyou Crest, the Siskiyou Crest Coalition, an organization in the Applegate dedicated to finding protections for the Crest and its surrounding areas, is producing a three-day arts, science, and culture festival at Pacifica Garden, in Williams, July 14-16, 2023. We will have panels of scientists, poetry readings, music, keynote speakers, a day of guided hikes, and, as its focus, an exhibit of art from some of the best artists in the area.

Please spread the word. Arts of all kinds are eligible— visual (painting, drawing, photography, video), plastic (sculpture, mosaic, ceramic), textile (weaving, quilting, soft sculpture), music and dance, and any other kind that doesn’t fit into those categories. Any piece entered for the show must take as its subject the wild nature of the Siskiyou Mountains. Entrants must be sixteen years old or older. Applications will be available after the first of the year and will be accepted between March 15 and May 1.

This will be a juried show. We would like to have three judges for each category of art—visual, plastic, textile, and music/dance. Can you suggest people who might serve as judges?
We are excited about bringing this festival to the area and to show off the fine artists of our region who show their love for the Siskiyous through their art. If it sounds exciting to you, too, help us spread the word, give us names of possible judges, and join us in organizing. Join the committee, help hang the show, give us advice—we can use lots of help!
