Easily Accessible Firewood Now Available on your National Forest

GOLD BEACH, OR, December 6, 2019 –The Gold Beach Ranger District of the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest is offering easy access to firewood cutting opportunities in the greater Chetco area, near Snowcamp Meadows, and east of Agness, Oregon.

Much of the firewood is located with easy access from roads.  Firewood permits cost $20 for two cords and are for the removal of standing dead and down evergreen conifers and Pacific madrone that are free of limbs, branches, needles and soil. Permittees are limited to 10 cords per year per household.

In addition to the roadside cutting areas, other specific areas of the Gold Beach Ranger District are available for firewood removal.  Be sure to refer to associated maps for specific locations of firewood cutting areas and follow conditions on the backside of firewood permit.

While there are large areas for firewood cutting, the area from the Rogue River to the California border is designated as a Sudden Oak Death (SOD) quarantine area.  Within this area only Douglas-fir and Madrone are permitted to be removed for firewood.  To avoid spreading Sudden Oak Death, permits for some other tree species will be issued on a site-specific basis. No harvest is allowed within ½ mile of known SOD-infested sites.  These areas are displayed on permit maps.  By following permit stipulations, you can help prevent the spread of invasive SOD from your firewood gathering activities while enjoying the benefits of getting affordable, local firewood from the National Forests.

Firewood permits can be obtained at the Gold Beach Ranger District office, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.   Please carefully follow the permit stipulations that.   . Forest visitors can also download the free Motor Vehicle Use Map on the RRSNF website, as well as on the Avenza Maps app.  Firewood cutters will be issued a map when obtaining a permit.
