Siskiyou Field Institute-Botany 101 at the Rogue River Preserve

Looking closely at plants is wondrous, inspiring, and brings solace during a time of plant blindness. We will use the Rogue River Preserve as a laboratory for observing and learning the language of botany. Students will learn basic botany terminology, identify some lovely plants, and recognize common plant families while exploring oak woodlands, vernal pool-mounded prairie, chaparral, and a large floodplain forest. You’ll meet flowering plants and conifers head on – and even peek at nonvascular plants like lichens in this fascinating introduction to our local botanical universe. Bring a hand lens – and your poet’s heart!
